To combat E Coli outbreaks, Walmart is requiring their leafy green suppliers to utilize blockchain technology.
As part of their Food Traceability Initiative, Walmart is utilizing IBM Food Trust and its tested blockchain technology to trace their produce from farm to store shelf, so as to better prevent outbreaks of contaminated food.
The Decentralized Ledger Technology that IBM Food Trust uses clearly connects all parties involved in the growing, processing, and distribution of products, or in this case, leafy green vegetables. While Walmart has attempted a similar practice before to little avail, they are certain that this venture will be more fruitful, especially since it will not be costly for the farmers or transporters involved.
Exima is a firm believer in blockchain technology, our partner network Export Portal is developing its own proprietary blockchain network. With even major retailers investing in resources like these, small and medium businesses would do well to register with our platform and get a head start on the future of ecommerce.
